3 Keys to Social Media Success as a Small Business

By Dr. Shannon Leinen, MBA Program Director | Business

If you’re working on low advertising budget, promoting on social media is a no-brainer. In today’s global community, e-commerce is a necessity to remain viable in the public’s eye.

Small businesses need to educate themselves on modern marketing practices to stay relevant and continue to meet sales goals. Ultimately, you need a plan to create awareness and conscious consideration about what is going to drive customers and sales. It’s about making money and building a quality reputation for your business. And modern marketing means utilizing social media to promote your products or services. To find success on any social media platform, you’ll need to do these three things:

3 Keys to Social Media Success

  1. Be authentic

Don’t try to simply mimic your competition, instead, highlight your own features and speak directly to your unique customer base. It’s so important to find your own voice as a business. It’s also important to intimately know and understand your target customer. Make it personal—for you and for your customers. Authenticity goes a long way in building trust. And trust is at the root of all sales.

  1. Be consistent

Social media advertising isn’t a “one and done” concept. You need to build an online presence. The best way to do that is to be consistent and persistent. Post regularly. Respond to comments in a timely manner. Stay connected. It’s a good idea to create a social media advertising calendar to keep you engaged and on schedule. Planning even a month out can set you up for success.

  1. Be patient

Don’t expect success overnight. It can take a bit of time to get to a point where your social media efforts prove to be a huge success. But you’ll get there.

In the modern age of business, where small business owners are expected to be experts in finance, human resources, operations, customer service, and even marketing, it’s important to stay up to date on all the best practices.
