Encouragement to Entrepreneurs: Creating Success in a Changing World
“Change is the price of survival.”
Life is a cycle and process of change, with some experiences good, some not. That is the reality of life—and business. It has a way of humbling us, disciplining us and rewarding us in a thousand different ways. Think of life and growing a business as a marathon. Most good things and successes evolve over time. Let it evolve naturally and not resist, resent and reject the changes that will naturally occur. Anticipate, adapt and accept.
When consulting business clients, I am reminded about the importance of hanging in there during difficult stretches. Businesses fail and have great successes but it is the persistence of the entrepreneur that launches the business to the next level, never using setbacks as excuses to fail. And so, when you think things are just too hard or maybe unfair, don’t give up or despair. Keep churning.
There is an old saying that if you keep doing what you have always done, you keep getting what you always got.
“We live in a time of paradox, contradiction, opportunity, and above all, change. To the fearful, change is threatening because they worry that things may get worse. To the hopeful, change is encouraging because they believe things may get better. To those who have confidence in themselves, change is a stimulus because they believe one person can truly make a difference and influence other people and events. These people are the doers and motivators.”
–Buck Rogers, Getting the Best Out of Yourself & Others
Leaders are change agents, and change is constant. You must act upon the convictions of your beliefs regardless of the resistance you will get from outside forces, skeptics and cynics. It is only through those changes and transitions that transformations take place, and a purpose for life is found.
Business—and life—is cyclical. There are cycles when you survive and cycles when you thrive. The key to success is to spend more time and energy on thriving than you do surviving.
